[69] Ekkoriban írt művei jelentős részében a korszakban formabontónak számító akkordokat alkalmazott, valamint hirtelen hangnemváltásokat és átmeneteket, illetve moll-harmóniákat. [72] Összességében elmondható, hogy Haydn zenetörténeti jelentősége a szonátaforma tökéletesítése mellett a vonósnégyes és a szimfónia klasszikus formájának kifejlesztésében áll, [73] ezen kívül nagy jelentőségűek német nyelvű oratóriumai is.

According to Griesinger, "Four case shots fell, rattling the windows and doors of his house. After the 1830s, Berlioz traveled throughout Europe to find audiences who recognized and appreciated his music. The central message of Beethoven's Fifth is struggle and triumph over all the odds. Beethoven began his career writing rather discursive, loosely organized sonata expositions; but with the onset of his "Middle period", he revived and intensified Haydn's practice, joining the musical structure to tight small motifs, often by gradually reshaping both the work and the motifs so that they fit quite carefully.

If at such a performance the attitude of the audience is lukewarm, the chances of a second performance in front of the same audience are almost microscopic, and the best that can be hoped for is that a second performance may be given somewhere in the provinces with more success. At the same time, recent studies have suggested that Haydn’s understanding of contemporaneous aesthetic thought and rhetorical theories discussed by many philosophes was more extensive than hitherto surmised.

Notably, Beethoven adopted the practice of taking his time and aiming high. Bach was buried in St John's Cemetery which stood one block outside the town's Grimma Gate in the early morning of July 31, and in the absence of any tombstone his grave was soon forgotten.
