An early sign of huge promise, but one that lacks maturity. Of his symphonies, the "descriptive" ones are of less interest, comments Grove. Indeed, Einstein credits the great discovery of Haydn's life as raising the middle development section of sonata form, previously a mere episode of melodic progression that soon returned home, to the core and focus of the movement. Haydn's contact with other composers or their works frequently resulted in further inspiration, often mutual.
