And it is worth noting that in the first passage, the Logos remains in God after being begotten by him, a fact which is perplexing in the extreme if his being begotten, and thus 'distinct' from God (in, I suppose, what would have to be a necessarily spatial imaginative construct), were somehow the beginning of his personal existence. Does our Christology result in lives and actions that are different from the world? It might imagine, as we considered before, that the methods of the historians of Jesus are the methods of a historically grounded theological Christology, and therefore this Christology has to be made over from head to foot.

The Reformers boldly protested against Romanism’s faith-and-works system by proclaiming, “Sola fide!” (faith alone). Thus he regards claims like that of Vawter's, that Wisdom here is depicted as an "independent deity," as something that is "simply unwarranted and imports into such passages connotations never intended by the writers."
